Mayor Keeler Announces New Director of Economic Development – City of Albuquerque

Mayor Keeler today announced the appointment of the new Director of Economic Development, Charles Ashley III. As an active member of the Albuquerque community and a successful entrepreneur, Ashley will bring his knowledge of economic and community development into his role to help attract new business and support those already here in our city.

“Albuquerque is entering a promising time of sustainable and diversified economic growth, and we look forward to having Charles lead our management through it,” he said. Mayor Tim Keeler. “His work as a business owner, advocate and partner for the city over the years has created opportunities for people from all walks of life, and we are fortunate to have him continue in this mission with us.”

Charles Ashley III is the founder of Cultivating Coders, a New Mexico-based company that provides technical and curricular training in web and mobile app development to K-12 schools, as well as adult learners, in urban tribal, rural, and neglected areas that lack resources in coding and computer science education. Soon after beginning Cultivating Coders, she won the SXSW Tech Startup of the Year award for innovation in her coaching approach. Prior to assuming his current role, Charles was a marketing and strategy advisor to numerous clients in the technology, higher education and film sectors.

“Economic development is vital to the success of society, as it plays a role across sectors. Whether it is film, workforce development, or education, our city’s economy benefits greatly when these sectors are strong and interconnected, as an entire ecosystem,” he said. Charles Ashley III. “I look forward to serving Albuquerque in a new capacity, building on the strong work the department has done in recent years to support our local economy and bring many new opportunities.”

Ashley previously worked as a Communication and Film Marketing Specialist with the Bernalillo County Department of Economic Development in New Mexico, and was Director of Marketing for CNM’s STEmulus Center. Charles equal parts successful businessman and advocate for compassionate society. He has received numerous awards that reflect the following: Albuquerque Rising Star Award for Economic Development; Business Journal Influencers: Rising Star Award; Albuquerque Business First Under-40 Award; He was selected as a member of the White House TechHire Initiative. Most recently, he received the New Mexico Ethics in Business Award.

Charles succeeds in finding effective solutions to problems and then reviving those solutions. He hopes that his empathy for workforce development opportunities and education, combined with his business acumen, will continue to influence the positive growth of an overlooked population. Charles also strongly believes in giving back to the community; He has served on several boards of directors, including the ONE Albuquerque Trust (as chair), the US Eagle Federal Credit Union, the New Mexico Learning Alliance, New Mexico AIDS Services, and the APS Foundation’s Non-Self-Selection Committee. He also served in Albuquerque, on Mayor Perry’s Arts and Culture Deep Dive Committee and Mayor Keeler’s Education Transition Team.
