Our relationship to our work may be one of the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Are you happy with your job? Or are you one of the millions of quitters? Is this trip enough or working long hours from home?
It is a tough job market for employers. The US added a negligible number of 199,000 new jobs in December and only 249,000 in November at a time when the economy should create twice that amount, based on economists’ expectations.
The US unemployment rate fell to 3.9% from 4.2%, reaching a new pandemic low. The rate was 3.5% just before the pandemic. The labor force participation rate has reached an epidemic high level of 61.9%.
Wages increased 4.7% in 2021. The last time wages rose quickly was several decades ago. It was one of the silver linings in the December jobs report, showing that employers in the era of a pandemic are eager to attract employees.
highest paid job
Now for the $200,000 question: The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists physicians as the “highest-paid professions” in the country, citing psychiatrists, obstetricians, gynecologists, and surgeons among the best-paid.
They earn a median salary of $208,000 per year with 3% growth over the next decade, equivalent to approximately 24,800 jobs. This salary is approximately 3 times the median annual wage.
This aligns with Glassdoor’s latest report, “25 Paying Jobs in America,” which lists the doctor at number one, making it one of the best-paying jobs in the country. C-suite jobs were excluded from its annual report.
Physicians earned a median annual salary of $193,415, according to a 2019 Glassdoor report, which controls variables such as city and level of seniority, and takes into account job title normalization that aggregates similar job titles.
Other good paying jobs
Other non-medical jobs on the BLS list include airline pilots ($160,970), computer and information systems managers ($151,150), architectural and engineering managers ($149,530), and marketing managers ($142,170).
But what if you don’t work as a doctor, pilot, or marketing manager? Professional websites that use anonymous salary reports from across the country help you know if you are getting paid at market rate.
Do not bet on your colleague in divulging the means. In a survey conducted by researchers at Harvard Business School and UCLA, about half of respondents said they would. Not Tell their peers what they’ve earned, even for a $125 bonus.
The newspaper said: “Individuals are afraid to ask their co-workers about their salaries, because they realize that most of their co-workers prefer to keep their salary information confidential.” If they ask, they will likely also answer the same question.
