Preparing the teams for continued isolation

Over the past two years, we’ve begun to discover how feelings of isolation can be harmful to our teams. Even employees who assumed they’d be comfortable “working alone” in the past have learned that their creativity and productivity can struggle outside of the office.

Unfortunately, for many businesses, government-imposed shutdowns and restrictions may mean you have no choice but to require your teams to work from home in certain situations. When this is the case, businesses need to properly prepare to help their employees work effectively from home.

What are the challenges that companies face in isolation?

While most people did not expect the shift to hybrid and remote work practices to happen as quickly as it did, there are certainly benefits to a distributed workforce. Allowing team members to work, at least in part, from home can improve their productivity levels, reduce internal employee costs, and even enhance overall business performance.

The benefits of remote and distributed work are the reason why many companies are starting to implement long-term hybrid working strategies. However, the threat of isolation is why the majority of companies focus on “hybrid” work, rather than all remote operations. For many employees, some association with the established standard workforce is still required. Unfortunately, this is not possible during periods of isolation.

Today, he says, more work needs to be done to prepare for continued isolation. “With the number of cases in the world steadily increasing again, many countries are heading towards another lockdown. “We need to make sure we have the right strategies in place to help all employees – especially those who have spent decades working in the office and follow specific procedures.”

What advice would you give for new closures?

When I asked him what advice he would give companies facing upcoming closures, Tony reiterated that the most important thing for companies now is planning. The faster organizations can start scanning the market and looking for the right technology and tools, the better off.

“People need to start thinking about how we can offer the best possible work experience to their clients. We need to look at how we will keep people feeling connected, happy and connected to the team when they are at home, and how we will continue to encourage high levels of productivity and efficiency.”

Tony also suggests looking for stability in future tools. How important is the feedback loop?

Finally, Gallo says companies will need to start listening more carefully to their employees. Creating an open communication channel in the evolving workplace will be essential.
