New Year Message… About Messages

New Year Message… About Messages

As the year draws to a close and the world falls into the grip of Omicron, we find that remote media work, in and of itself, is in rude health.

The evolution of disruptive services that have traditionally formed a chain of companies we know and love has been slowly gathering pace. They now form a suite of platforms and services (Platforms as a Service, no less) that are sold to large corporations to use the myriad offerings that we’ve always seen as somewhat niche.

This is evidenced by how Communications as a Service (CPaaS) platforms have turned into such a huge business. Companies looking to talk to their customers through the channels that customers want rather than email and posting should quickly expand their communications to include OTT, WhatsApp, and even simple SMS. The telemedia industry was there to help.

It has become a large company that shows no sign of slowing down. The US CPaaS market, for example, is set to reach $15 billion by 2026, illustrating how aggressively companies are using messaging.

The Asia Pacific region is also set to grow in CPaaS through 2022, while developing markets in Latin America and, to some extent, Africa are also likely to bypass old ways of interacting with customers and will also become heavy users of CPaaS.

The transition to using messaging to interact with consumers is already well underway. This was further illustrated by Infobip, which handled 4.23 billion messages over the weekend of Black Friday-Cyber Monday globally…equal to half the world’s population and a testament to how important central messages are now in the world of commerce e.

Messaging is now largely a way to interact with brands and for brands to interact with consumers. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, security, that’s what. The increasing use of A2P SMS in particular is raising security concerns, and with 5G starting to take off, many are concerned that there are no proper security measures in place to protect 5G A2P SMS.

This is something MNOs need to note as 5G rolls out, as experts warn there must be a scheme to secure 5G SMS to make it truly viable and we expect to see more of it in 2022.

In fact, there’s a lot to look forward to in the new year, and starting this week, we’re running a series of predictions for the year ahead. It will be interesting to see how they play as the year goes on.

But this is for 2022. At the moment Telemedia Towers are taking a well deserved vacation, so have a merry Christmas and we look forward to working with you, keeping you informed and hearing all your news in 2022. Happy New Year!
