Web development platform Vercel acquires Turborepo

Vercel has acquired Turborepo, a high-performance build system for JavaScript and TypeScript monorepos that makes it easier for teams to extend their codebases and accelerate build speeds. Existing Turborepo customers will have a smooth transition path to migrate from Turborepo’s cloud-based caching infrastructure to Vercel, and the Turborepo CLI is now open source under the MPL 2.0 license. Jared Palmer, creator of Turborepo and popular open source projects including Formik and TSDX, will continue to work to accelerate Turborepo capabilities and lead the construction performance team at Vercel.

Web development platform Vercel acquires game-changing Turborepoto for front-end developers

“We saw an incredible amount of complexity in the way most front-end development teams build, test, and deploy, and set out to create the best way to build and scale a front-end database. Turborepo gives developers the ability to manage that complexity without the maintenance burden that comes with Traditional monorepo architectures,” said Jared Palmer, creator of Turborepo.

“The combination of Turborepo and Vercel’s build time and infrastructure building bridges the gap between what every developer needs and what so far only super talents have available. It’s kind of magical, and really, really fast. This is the platform for the future of business on the web.”

Turborepo has clear synergies with Vercel, which pioneered the zero-configuration concept in the React space with Next.js, and in delivering content with edge and publishing functionality, allowing teams to focus exclusively on their product. Turborepo provides zero configuration for monorepos, carefully extracting the complexity and burden of scale and maintenance so development teams can ship faster and focus on exceeding user expectations.

“CI/CD times went from over 20 minutes to less than eight minutes when we started using Turborepo, with some jobs taking less than a minute depending on the number of transitive dependencies. We saw a 65% improvement in total pipeline time after a month. The first,” said Miguel Oller, co-founder of Makeswift.

Turborepo’s main features and benefits include:

  • Uni-Zero Configuration Support
  • Microfrontend reference solution
  • Faster, smarter builds
  • Better monorepo development

“The platform Jared has built and the speed it enables for Vercel users is truly game-changing for front-end developers,” said Guillermo Rauch, Vercel CEO.

“Improving both runtime and build time performance allows us to simply set a new global cap on build performance for the web. I look forward to working closely with Jared as we continue to transform the nature of web development and see what users will build with Vercel.”
